Hanami – Picnic Under The Cherry Blossoms

1:00–4:00 pm, April 14, 2018 at Middle Branch Park
3301 Waterview Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21230

A stunningly beautiful spring day, with a gorgeous blue sky and gentle breeze rewarded those who came to Charm City’s first annual Cherry Blossom Celebration in Middle Branch Park. Under a constant sprinkling of flower petals, bonsai artists clipped tiny trees and jazz music floated pleasing notes for the approximately 100 picnickers. Young people played badminton and flew colorful kites. Plein air artists captured scenic views of the Hanover Street Bridge, the Middle Branch, and the lovely Sakura trees. Recreation and Parks offered tours of the Boat House and the Baltimore-Kawasaki Sister Committee presented Japanese cultural traditions centered on enjoying the beginning of spring.

Most of us enjoyed just relaxing on our blue mats or in the soft grass, chatting with friends and eating traditional ‘bring your own’ picnic lunches. This event was the perfect change from our noisy, plugged-in lives. Several people remarked on how unhurried and relaxed the Hanami made them feel. Give us your feedback on this event as we look forward to next year’s Hanami, A Cherry Blossom Celebration. Drop us a line on our Contact Us page.
